THE BIOCHEMISTRY OF LIFE IS INTIMATELY ASSOCIATED WITH THE GEOCHEMISTRY OF
THE EARTH. UNDERSTANDING THE INTERCONNECTIONS BETWEEN BIOCHEMISTRY AND
GEOCHEMISTRY MAY SHED LIGHT ON HOW LIFE STARTED. SINCE THE ORIGINAL
THEORIZING OF J.D. BERNAL IN THE 1950'S, THERE HAVE BEEN A NUMBER OF
THEORIES ABOUT THE SIGNIFICANCE OF MINERALS AND MINERAL SURFACES FOR THE
EMERGENCE OF LIFE. EXPERIMENTAL WORK HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT ON CLAY MINERALS
BY CAIRNS-SMITH'S AND THE USE OF CLAYS AS CATALYTIC SURFACES WAS PIONEERED
BY ORGEL, FERRIS AND OTHERS. THE STUDY OF METAL SULFIDES IS ANOTHER AREA OF
EXPERIMENTAL WORK THAT AIMS TO SHED ON THE CONNECTIONS BETEEN BIOCHEMISTRY
AND GEOCHEMISTRY
